(July 11, 2026, Hong Kong) Organized by World Class Tests and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission, the 2025-26 FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Hong Kong Championship officially opened today at Hall 2 of AsiaWorld-Expo for a two-day event.
The FLL Hong Kong Championship opening ceremony invited Ms. Wendy Kwan, Assistant Commissioner (Common Services and Sourcing); Ms. Grace Li, Governor of World Class Tests (Asia) Limited; Mr. Ming Kwok, Chairman of the FLL Hong Kong Organising Committee; Mr. Jason Wang, Head of FLL Greater China LEGO Education Competitions; Dr. Tsang Kim Fung, Vice Chairman, The Institution of Engineering and Technology Hong Kong (IET Hong Kong); and Mr. Christoph Chow, Vice President, Hong Kong Association of Computer Education, to officiate the ceremony.
As a highlight event of the annual STEAM education festival—2025-26 FIRST® LEGO® League INNOFest—this year's competition attracts over 320 elite teams from more than 15 countries and regions worldwide, with more than 2,000 student participants. Participating regions include Thailand, Morocco, Italy, Romania, and others, making it the largest event of its kind in Hong Kong. The championship also features representatives from top local schools, including La Salle Primary School, Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division, Diocesan Girls' School, Queen's College, St. Paul's Co-educational College, and The True Light School of Hong Kong, all vying for top honors.
Central Asian Teams Make a Landmark Debut in Hong Kong, Marking a New Milestone in STEAM Education Exchange
A defining highlight of this year's competition is the large-scale arrival of 4 teams from Central Asia—hailing from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian countries—to compete at the FLL Hong Kong Championship. The participation of these Central Asian student delegations stands as a powerful testament to both sides' commitment to deepening youth education exchange, and underscores Hong Kong's unique role as a "super connector" bridging Central Asia and global markets. Earlier this February, local Hong Kong teams had already traveled to Kazakhstan to compete in the FIRST Central Asia Championship, showcasing Hong Kong's international competitiveness in STEAM education. This return visit by Central Asian teams further strengthens bilateral youth STEAM exchange, writing a new chapter in Hong Kong-Central Asia STEAM education cooperation.
Linking Archaeological Exploration with Modern Technology – Three Divisions Fully Unlock Creative Potential
This year's theme, "UNEARTHED," centers on archaeological exploration, encouraging students to think creatively and work hands-on to apply technology in solving challenges faced by archaeologists, connecting ancient discoveries with modern technology and sustainable development. The FLL Hong Kong Championship consists of three divisions: FLL Discover (ages 4–6), FLL Explore (ages 6–10), and FLL Challenge (ages 9–16), fully stimulating the creativity, engineering design, programming, and problem-solving skills of young children and primary and secondary school students. The event also features a parent-child interactive zone, school innovation booths, and a LEGO design sharing exhibition and play area, inviting the public to experience the fun of STEAM education firsthand and fostering a city-wide culture of innovation.
The two-day event features age-group competitions, on-the-spot project evaluations, and award ceremonies. The champion team will have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong at the at the Global FIRST Championship in the United States next year. FLL Explore participants are required to present their learning outcomes under three main themes: "Explore, Create and Test, and Share." FLL Challenge teams must prepare for four key components: robot design, innovation project, robot performance, and core values. The highlight is the robot performance competition, where each team must complete 15 tasks on the competition map within 2.5 minutes, aiming for a maximum score of 545 points. Judges will select the overall champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up based on these four criteria.
Hong Kong's Record of International Excellence – Outstanding Teams Set to Shine on the World Stage Outstanding teams from the FLL Hong Kong Championship will have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in a series of international competitions, competing with global STEAM elites to broaden their horizons. Hong Kong teams have achieved remarkable results on the international stage in recent years—S.K.H. Bishop Baker Secondary School claimed the fourth-place Robot Performance Award at the 2024-25 FLL World Championship, while HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Lin Association School earned the "Coding Award" in 2025-26, fully demonstrating Hong Kong's international competitiveness in STEAM education.
Looking ahead, outstanding teams will have the opportunity to compete in the FLL China National Championship in late July and the FLL Asia Open Championship in early August, with top performers potentially advancing to the Global FIRST Championship in the United States in April 2027—continuing Hong Kong's distinguished tradition on the international STEAM stage and promoting cross-regional STEAM education exchange.
